Cleaning up after the inconsiderate

The environment is filled with all kinds of garbage but local groups and individuals are taking a public stand against the visual and physical presence of garbage around Moose Jaw.
During the few spring-like days recorded so far this year, a public-spirited initiative to clean up the local ditches and road allowances has been undertaken by school children, seniors, service clubs and military personnel.
This is the action of good citizenship, the action of citizens who would never think to spread their personal litter on public thoroughfares or on the private property of others.
They are in stark contrast to the cretins who do throw their junk willy nilly wherever they happen to be intruding at the time, whether it be on a city street, a rural road, a schoolyard or in front of a garbage can.
These individuals have no pride in their surroundings, no respect for the property of others and no desire to clean up their act and behave like responsible citizens. Is this inherited or learned behaviour?
It is even worse to know that city residents haul their debris to rural areas and throw it along the road - mattresses, bags of old clothes, household waste, and even in one case this spring, the kitchen sink.
There is no reason for such inconsiderate behaviour, but also no reason to believe those who are guilty will ever change their littering ways.
That is why it is appreciated when non-litterers gather their garbage bags and volunteer several hours and days to gather what has been thrown aside by others with no sense of responsibility.

... where is the proof of this? Rural people are different? Have you ever seen the pile of old cars and junk sitting around farm property. City folks didn't dump that crap there.

David from SK, (Have you ever seen the pile of old cars and junk sitting around farm property.)

The key here is this would be the property of the rural people that cars and junk would be on. If they want to collect junk on their property let them. It is the garbage that's tossed out on the roads, ditches and streets that has become a common practice for our society. I don't care if it is rural or city folk doing it. The practice needs to be stopped. Dump fees are not that high wait till you have a load and take there. Keep our province clean.

Every time I see it, I can't believe it but I see people (both young and old) throwing their garbage out their car windows - with everyone and anyone watching. Just the other day I saw a car load of young people going through the intersection of Main Street and Caribou Street and one of the kids threw a full McDonald's bag out into the street. This was at noon hour and plenty of people were out driving and walking and could see it all happen. The problem is that there is really nothing a person can do when you see a moving vehicle littering. Can a person take down their license plate and report them to the police? Would anything seriously be done about this? It is up to those of us who have some values (and brains), to teach our children (and whoever else might listen), to smarten up and think about who it is that they think will clean up after them!
