Proposed community plan promotes more bike paths

City of Moose Jaw municipal planner Michelle Sanson said residents could expect to see more bicycle-friendly roadways in future development areas if council approves the proposed community plan.
The proposed plan includes the encouragement and establishment of cycling paths and routes locally, allowing recreational travel and bike access to and from places of employment, as well as schools.
The plan also recommends separate cycling paths in parks and along boulevards, as well as separate bicycle lanes on designated streets where separate bike paths are not feasible.
Sanson told the Times-Herald the community plan would promote development of such bike-friendly paths in existing parts of the city, but is more so intended for future subdivisions.
During the July 13 executive committee meeting, the executive committee voted to hold an informal information meeting with administration to learn more about community plan proposals and administration explained the document details to council on Monday.
The development of a local community plan has been years in the making, with engineering department surveys going out to Moose Javians in 2002 and public discussion sessions held in 2003.
Despite the many years administration has worked on the plan, Sanson said it's not unusual that certain council members would require more information on the plan before giving it first bylaw reading.

Lynn B., I too thought that these people who live in the newer areas were rich, but as Dave from SK pointed out, that is where the poor people live and park their boats and RV's. The rich people live in the older areas.

I would welcome bike paths for bikers...this is something that has been needed for a very long time. And no..I do not ride a bicycle. I just worry for the people riding bikes when I see them trying to deal with traffic while they are biking.

    I dont get it!!??!!??!!

There is currently bike paths in the newer area in sunningdale and there are people who live along this street that park their cars/trucks/boats/ and RVS in the bike path!!!!

What is the point of having a bike path up there if people cant ride their bike on the designated lane on the road...

Why are these people not being ticketed or towed!!??!??

Thats all we need, wider streets with more bike paths so all the rich snobs up there can park their giant gas guzzling Recreational Vechiles in the way!! Cudos to everyone!! Just makes more work for the road cone and line painting crews that are a waste of tax payers money!!

What a waste of time and space!

Someone please tax my bicycle so that the new rich areas of town get bike paths. No thanks, Terry B.

You people are to funny I think there are a lot of in debt people in the new areas mortaged to the nuts and wealthy people in all areas, just cause you have all the toys doesn't mean your rich it's that you have the means to purchase it doesn't mean they can afford it.

Note to jimmy: Not everyone who lives in a new or newer area is rich. Also there are others who are quite wealthy who live in older areas; so like much of the stuff you spew out, it makes no sense. I often wonder why all the smartest....nevermind

I like the idea of bike paths, I just don't like Terry B's idea of licencing and registering (for a fee) my bicycles, especially when the majority of the new paths will be in areas of town far from where I live.

Bike paths would be a very good thing, along with a well educated public on bike safety. This should not be aimed solely at kids, but everyone. I have witnessed more adult goofs on bikes than any number of children. Another consideration is that this public transportation trend needs to be properly funded, and it is obvious that current property taxes will not, and should not fund such projects. A system of cycle registration and licensing should be considered, so that a solid and safe cycling community can be sustained and expanded upon as the need arises. Does'nt have to cost a fortune, but just enough to give cyclists what they need and make them safer, as well as properly catered to.
