Two local cyclists had a great weekend as they claimed national titles in two different provinces this past weekend.
At the Canadian National Junior road cycling championships in Devon, Alta. just outside of Edmonton, Moose Jaw resident Josh Kropf won two national titles. At the Canadian Para-cycling championships in Saint-Georges de Beauce, Que. Arnold Boldt won a pair of titles as well.
Josh Kropf won the under-15 boys time trial and the criterium road race in Devon to claim sweep the national titles in his age group.
Saturday he won the time trial by a scant 1.8 seconds ahead Sam Ratzke.
“I wanted to win, but whatever happened was fine. I just wanted to do my best,” said Kropf whose average speed was 38.5 km/h.
The time trial was only eight kilometres and Kropf finished it in 12 minutes and 28.1 seconds.
Ratzke was leading in the criterium, but crashed on the final lap. Kropf had no idea he had passed Ratzke and assumed he was second when he crossed the finish line.
Jalen Kropf finished fifth in the criterium and eighth in the time trial in the under-17 men’s category at the same event.
In Quebec, Boldt also won both the time trial and the road race.
Sunday Boldt finished a gruelling 40.8 km road race course in an hour, 21 minutes and 11 seconds to finish just four seconds in front of his closest competitor, youngster Jaye Milley.
Saturday Boldt also won the time trial.
