“We had some good hits and some good runs and everyone started to get into it and everybody started to play finally,” said North of the second half.
For the young Vikings, the win will be a boon to their confidence and North gave a lot of praise to the younger guys for stepping up.
“The young guys are going to be a force, that’s for sure,” said North. “I’m looking forward to it. Not even for this year, but when I’m gone I want to come and watch Vanier football because they’re going to have a great team.”
Panko said it was a game that his young team simply needed to win.
Estevan also has a young group and Ricci was proud of the way his team competed in what was, for many, their first football game.
“We were in there, we had our chances and we didn’t capitalize on it,” said Ricci. “Moose Jaw did an excellent job. They’ve got a very well coached team. They poured it on in the second half after they weathered the storm a little bit.”
The Elecs were happy to pick up a late touchdown as Zach Rensby ran the ball in to give the home fans something to cheer about.
“It was very exciting,” said Ricci. “For us, small victories are going to be something we’re really going to look for this year. It’s a good sign and something to build on.”
The Elecs forced a two-and-out and got the ball back and tried to drive for more points before being denied by the Vikings defence.
