The 23-6 quarter-final win is a far cry from the 27- and 35-point margins that the Vikings posted against the Elecs this year.
“(Estevan) came out hard,” said Vanier defensive coordinator Miguel Cruz. “They knew that this could be their last game, they had nothing to lose, and those are dangerous teams.”
Vanier showed signs of producing another blowout early on, as Michael North and Keegan Arnyek both scored touchdowns in the first quarter. Arnyek added another major in the second quarter to make the score 20-0 at the half. Arnyek would add a field goal late in the game to complete Vanier’s scoring.
But Estevan refused to go quietly. James Chamney made had a 10-yard run into the endzone in the third quarter to rattle Vanier’s cage a bit.
“We’re very happy with the way the guys played,” said Elecs head coach Marco Ricci. “It’s been . . . all year, this kind of improvement. We just ran out of games. We needed to play more games and give these guys a little more experience. But we’re very fortunate that we got to play in this game. We gave it all we got, but we just fell short.”
