The Peacock Tornadoes saw their provincial football hopes dashed in overtime Saturday afternoon in Weyburn.
The Weyburn Eagles beat the Tornadoes 14-7 in overtime to win the Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association’s 3A provincial football semifinal.
The Tornadoes were the defending 3A provincial champions and had completed their second straight undefeated season in the Moose Jaw High School Football League.
The teams were dead even for 48 minutes of action. The Eagles opened the scoring, but the Braeden Lang’s good kick return got the Tornadoes off to a good start on the subsequent drive. The Tornadoes matched the Eagles score on the next drive when Josh Huschi threw a touchdown pass to Adam Bachiu.
The Eagles scored on a one-yard run in the first possession of overtime. The overtime format was the same as the Canadian Football League uses, but the Tornadoes weren’t able to answer the host’s score for a second time.
Weyburn will travel to Saskatoon to play the 3A provincial final next Saturday.
