Saskatchewan got off to a winning start at the Football Canada Cup in Wolfville, Nova Scotia Sunday morning.
The under-18 provincial team beat Manitoba 26-15 to advance to Wednesday’s national semifinal.
The provincial team features Central’s Jacques Geyer, Peacock’s Justin Filteau and Vanier’s Keegan Arnyek. Geyer was named Saskatchewan’s defensive player of the game after he had two sacks and recovered a fumble. He was also in on three tackles.
Saskatchewan grabbed a 13-0 lead following a nine-yard Addison Richards touchdown reception from Drew Burko, a field goal and a safety.
Saskatchewan built their lead to 26-7 at the end of the third quarter Sean Stenger kicked his second and third field goals of the day and Burko ran in from a yard out.
The Saskatchewan defence held Manitoba to negative 20 yards rushing, but gave up 239 through the air.
Arnyek had three solo tackles, an assisted tackle and a tackle for a six-yard loss. He also forced a fumble and broke up a pair of passes. Filteau had a solo tackle and an assist from his weak side linebacker spot.
