The Caronport Cougars football team is feeling much like the Saskatchewan Roughriders of late.
“We are like the Riders…we wish we were doing better than we are,” said Ken Guenter, coach of the Cougars. “We really have a tough league. We have three of the best four teams in the province in our league.”
The Cougars are off to a 2-1 record in the 6-man football league.
In the league, they have Watrous, who are the defending provincial champions and Wynyard, who beat Caronport in the playoffs last season and were runners up.
“It is terrific competition,” said Guenter.
With a roster of 27 athletes, 12 of those are veteran players — not a commonality for Caronport.
“We have a good core of veterans this year that are really adding a lot to our team,” he stated.
With so many veterans, the goal is a big one this year.
“Our goal would be to win a provincial championship, but it is going to be a really hard road because we just lost 26-20 to one of these top teams. We are still in the mix though,” said Guenter. “This is really the year. We are peaking because we have seven kids that have been on the team that have been with us for four years. That is not common for us. So to have that veteran core is really a great opportunity. Next year will be a rebuild.”
The Cougars have three veterans on their defensive line; experienced receivers and a veteran quarterback in Jonny Toews.
“Jonny Toews is back and he is just a natural athlete and he is just a nice person to have lead our team,” said Guenter of his quarterback. “He is very unselfish and he sees the field so well. He is good at calling his own plays and he is a real leader out there.”
The Cougars have six league games then playoffs. The playoffs go until November with the championship game occurring around Remembrance Day. However, they will try to improve their record on Thursday when they head to Watrous for another season game.
“They are our archrivals…we have never beat them,” he said. “We have come close, but never.”
