It was his first Hillcrest Men's Club Championship in about a decade, but Rob Auckland had to make a more recent comeback.
Auckland won his second-ever men's club championship with a last hole victory over Mark Albert even though Albert was up by two holes at the half-way point of the 36-hole match play championship final.
"I think it was just towards the end Mark opened the door for me a couple of times," Auckland said. "I really struggled putting but I kept hitting a lot of greens and making a lot of pars.
"I wish I could say I made five birdies coming in, or something like that, but I was just staying consistent making pars and Mark had a couple of bad breaks towards the end."
The key to match play is clearly not getting down on yourself and maintaining a consistency.
"It would be nice if you went out and made a lot of birdies, but if you can't, you don't want to give away holes by making bogeys and double bogeys," said Auckland. "You've got to at least tie holes if you're not making birdies at wait for your opportunities to do things."
Auckland had a difficult road to get to the final. In the last week and a half, he's beaten Ken Bradley (4 and 3) in the semifinal, and before that he knocked off Davin Jocelyn and Kevin Ryan.
"It's nice to go the road I did," he said. "Beating Davin Jocelyn, who is one of the top players here, and then Ken Bradley, I don't know how many times he's been on the provincial team. He's been the top golfer here for years and it's the first time I've beaten him in match play. And then to beat Mark . . ."
