If life is a highway, then Ken Bradley beat rocker Tom Cochrane all day long.
Bradley's 1-under par 73 puts the Moose Jaw man in a tie for ninth at the Royal Canadian Golf Association senior men's nationals and one stroke ahead of the former Red Rider frontman. Moose Jaw's Doug Gillies finished his first day of the four-day tournament at 13-over par.
Bradley is four strokes behind co-leaders James Graham and Graham Cooke
"I'm feeling very good. I played really well today considering I didn't know the course that well," Bradley said. "I hit the ball right on the number most of the day today."
The wind blew hard, but Bradley did a good job of not making mistakes, keeping the ball down and putting very well. His day started off with a birdie on the 10th hole, as half of the field started on the back nine and the rest went to the front nine.
Bradley is a clear favourite to make the cut after day two - which will be at about 80 - but Gillies has his work cut out for him. He was not happy with his day.
"I played poorly," said Gillies. "I hit good tee shots and bad iron shots. I don't know . . . I just made the wrong club choices, missed the greens in bad spots and had trouble getting up and down."
Gillies, obviously frustrated in his first turn at senior nationals, said he's "hoping to make the right choices (Wednesday).
