Decoration Day, organized by Moose Jaw Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 59, was a full day of activities starting at 10 a.m. and running until 6 p.m.
Despite being cool and rainy, there was still a fairly good turnout to lay flags on soldiers' graves and attend the short service to honour them.
The ladies auxilliary prepared a luncheon for those who ventured out and for the volunteers both at the cemeteries and at the auditorium
Legion members and friends are encouraged to attend the annual show and shine which will be held in the parking lot of the Legion Saturday starting at 10 a.m. with prizes being awarded for different categories. Barbecued hamburgers, hotdogs and beverages will be available outside and in the lounge.
This month's general meeting will be held Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the auditorium.
There will be Canada Day celebrations July 1 with the colour party at the Cosmo Centre between 9-10 a.m. and then at Crescent Park at 2 p.m.
The Legion will be holding its annual golf fun day July 26 at Lynbrook Golf Course. A sign-up sheet will be posted on the bulletin board by the main floor entrance as the date approaches.
Early Bird Lions Club
Barrie Gunther presided at the June 8 meeting of the Early Bird Lions Club when it was reported that four members attended the CNIB charity golf tournament June 5 in Regina.
Members reported the participation was down but sponsorship was up.
Gord Jago asked for someone to take over his duties for the derby during the days prior to the event. Ticket sales are continuing at local business locations and volunteers are needed for various shifts. Workers are to be at Crescent Park by 10:30 a.m. Saturday to set up and prepare for the derby.
John Austin said highway cleanup work parties have completed their assigned portions on the south side of the Trans-Canada Highway and will do the north side after the grass has been cut. A total of 70 hours was involved with $13.50 worth of recylable material taken to SARCAN. Much other trash was also removed.
Bill Langford said the recent blood donor clinic was well attended but more donors are needed. He said a new recruitment campaign is underway, especially for high school students. Anyone signing up 25 or more students will be eligible to win a cash prize.
Members were asked to volunteer to run a wedding bar June 27.
Wayne McGregor reminded members of what qualifies as a makeup meeting when attendance at regular meetings is not possible.
An application for support of a family facing hardship due to prolonged illness was discussed. A motion was passed to contribute $250 and to ask Sight and Service to match this amount. Sight and Service is a district fund established to provide help to anyone facing financial hardship with sight-related or medical problems.
A board of directors will assess the request and if approved, and if funds are available, matching money is provided to the requesting club.
The Early Bird Lions Club has recently used this fund on several occasions. The largest amount was to help purchase a magnifier to be used for a visually impaired resident who is now able to read his mail and labels on his medications.
Discussion also took place to begin planning in the new year to enter a float in the Hometown Fair parade in 2010.
Officers for the new year will be installed at the next meeting at Timothy Eaton Gardens.
