After taking all of his preliminary matches to the final hole, Doug Gillies only needed 34 to claim the Hillcrest men's golf club championship Sunday.
Gillies beat defending champion Rob Auckland in the match play final. Gillies was ahead by three holes when the match ended on the 16th.
"I am very happy with how I played for the whole thing," said Gillies, who won his second title after first winning in 2004. "I struck the ball very well and everything was working.
"You have to be right on top of your game or else you aren't going to win."
In each of the previous rounds of the tournament, Gillies won by being one-up after all 18 holes were complete. Saturday, he beat Ken Bradley in one semifinal, while Auckland was two up with one left as he beat Bryan Chalmers in the other semi.
"The people I had to play - like Rod Bearchell, Daryl Herchuk, Ken and Rob - they're all very good players," said Gillies. "To beat them is a very good accomplishment."
Match play can be grueling at the best of times, never mind having to play all 18 holes in every match before the final. Gillies credited the field for how tight the matches were.
