Moose Jaw Warriors forward Jason Bast is well past the point in his career where he needs to impress anybody at an intrasquad game, but impress he did.
Bast scored twice and added two assists in a 5-2 win for his Black team, defeating White handily.
"I just wanted to work hard and make sure it was an up-tempo game," said Bast, who scored 34 goals in last season's breakout campaign. "I just wanted to push a lot of the younger guys so they can show what they got."
Bast's line of Ryley Grantham and Quinton Howden and himself accounted for four of the team's goals and ensured that Black had a lot of puck possession. Even the scrimmage teams Bast has been on have benefited greatly from his ability and desire. He scored three points in a shift in one of the scrimmages.
"I just wanted to come here and work hard and try to get back into shape and help out the young guys as much as I could," Bast said.
Warrior general manager Chad Lang and the Warriors' decision-makers have a lot of things to think about, particularly at forward. Those decisions won't come right away.
"We're in a bit of a tough situation where camp ends here tonight and we've got almost a two-week layover until we get into some preseason games," Lang said. "There's going to be an opportunity now for us to carry a few extra bodies to go through some practices and allow our coaching staff to start implementing systems and see how quickly these kids can respond, pick it up and absorb it."
