Every year, there are fewer and fewer zebras patrolling the rinks of Moose Jaw and area than the year before. And every year, the Moose Jaw Hockey Officials Association has to do something about it.
The association is hosting their annual referees clinic at SIAST Sept. 14 again in the hopes of eventually having better retention rates.
According to Todd Sharpe, the association's director of development, the Saskatchewan Hockey Association clinic - which runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. - introduces new people to officiating and re-certifies current officials. There is no pre-registration required.
"First of all it helps everybody stay current and also new officials can get plugged in to the local association, too," said Sharpe.
Officials first get into the trade because it's a good way to pick up some extra cash while participating in a sport they love.
"Usually, (money) is what lures our young officials in," said Sharpe. "Then, you also get older officials who are interested for other reasons, like getting a little exercise and staying involved with the game."
Sharpe said they would like to see "good hockey people" getting involved, like minor players and coaches with time on their hands, with a natural interest in hockey.
