In one game, the Moose Jaw Midget AAA Warriors showed the skill and perseverance they'll need throughout the season.
The Warriors defeated the Notre Dame Argos 4-2 in a game where they led 2-1 after the first period and played well, according to Warriors coach Ray Wareham.
"The second period got a little scrambly and running around, but that's to be expected," said Wareham. "Then, for the third period, I thought we played well again. For as much as we're trying to throw at these guys in a short period of time, seeing them go out there and work what we're teaching was nice to see. Get a couple of bounces and get a win."
The Warriors entered the third period tied 2-2 but were able to take advantage of some chances. Fourteen-year-old Warriors forward Brandon Halbgewachs chipped a loose puck in behind Notre Dame goaltender Charles Kaylor at 8:28 of the third period. Then Dylan Coupal found a loose puck in the corner and passed it to Brenden Harlos, who scored the insurance marker.
Troy Gasper and 14-year-old TJ Reeve scored Moose Jaw's other goals, while goaltender Nate Ferris stopped 21 of 23 shots in the win.
The second period saw a lot of the Warriors' power play, but also saw them cough up the lead. That's not a big concern at this point for Wareham.
"It hasn't really been touched on in practice," said Wareham of the power play. "We're still trying to learn to play in our own end . . . But I think we've got guys who are going to be pretty good back there."
Veterans Mitch Boucher, Travis Sparrow and Darren Lowe will be playing with rookies Ryan Murray, Tanner Clark and Dylan Coupal. The young players are offensive minded, which should eventually mean good things for the power play.
