    Michal Hlinka scored the only goal in the shootout as the Czech Republic beat the United States 3-2 in IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship pre-competition play at the Civic Centre.

    Czech goalie Jakub Sedlacek made 42 saves in regulation and turned away all three shots in the shootout.

    Hlinka scored in regulation to put the Czechs ahead 2-1, while Tomas Kubalik had a goal and an assist for the Czechs. Robert Kousal added a pair of assists.

    Chris Kreider and Ryan Bourque replied for the Americans.

    Jack Campbell stopped 18 of the 19 shots he faced for the U.S. and saved his best for last. He was pulled immediately after stopping Stepan Novotny of the Swift Current Broncos on a penalty shot after Novotny was hauled down on a short-handed breakaway.

    Mike Lee played the second half of the game in goal for the Americans and stopped 30 shots.

    The game drew 2,821 fans at the Civic Centre.
