The Moose Jaw Warriors organization felt it necessary to retire Theoren Fleury’s jersey well over a decade ago and his number nine he wore has been hanging in the Moose Jaw Civic Centre ever since.
And as of Friday, the organization felt it necessary to immortalize Fleury’s name in the Moose Jaw Warriors Hall of Fame as he was presented with a plaque and a painting in front of a packed house at the Heritage Inn.
Along with Fleury, former Tribe defenceman Scott Thomas and the Moose Jaw Booster Club were also inducted into the hall.
“It’s kind of hard to put into words what this means in the whole scheme of things,” said Fleury, “but obviously it feels good, feels great to be back in Moose Jaw.”
Fleury started his major junior career a member of the Warriors inaugural season in 1984, after the franchise just moved from Winnipeg. Despite being one of the first to dawn a crimson and black jersey, Fleury still holds franchise records in four offensive categories including most career goals (201) assists (271) and points (472) and two single season records in assists (92) and points (160) that Fleury earned in his final WHL season in 1987-88. In that season he scored 160 points, he spent a lot of time in the penalty box, 235 minutes to be exact.
Not too shabby considering what his first day in Moose Jaw was like at the tender age of 16.
