Despite a short bench, the Moose Jaw Generals finished their pre-season on a high note. With a week to practice before the regular season begins, the Generals saw positives in all areas in a home-and-home with Notre Dame over the weekend.
“I am very happy with the boys, considering we had a short bench,” stated Ray Wareham, head coach of the Generals. “We saw lots of positives and encouraging signs. We can head into the week on a high note and now it counts for real. “
The Generals were without Ty Symenuk and Tanner Davies due to illness and Michael Korol is out with a hip flexor injury. Regan Nagy, Rykr Cole and Shane Collins were with the U16 Sask team competing in an exhibition game.
The Generals finished their pre-season with a 5-1 victory over the Notre Dame Argos on Sunday afternoon at Mosaic Place. They dropped a 2-1 overtime loss to the Notre Dame Hounds on Saturday in Wilcox.
“It was a really good response to yesterday (Saturday),” stated Wareham. “I thought the work ethic was there both days, we were a bit more scrambly and out of position a bit more yesterday (Saturday).”
The Generals got goals from Ben Duperreault and Trey Tendler in the first period. With the Argos getting into penalty trouble in the second period, Cohen Yano scored on the power play for the Generals on a tap in at the crease off a rebound. Affiliated player Riley Cannon provided the Generals fourth goal off a rebound and Tendler got his second of the game on the power play in the final frame.
The Generals went 2-for-9 on the power play and only gave the Argos three chances on the man advantage.
“Puck possession on the power play, I thought we looked good. Now, it is just about exploiting those seams that happen,” said Wareham. “There were sometimes that something opened up for us and we didn’t attack them quick enough, but that will come with more experience and confidence.”
