Lack of effort sinks team against Blackhawks and Mintos

Moose Jaw Generals

It wasn’t how the weekend was supposed to go for the Moose Jaw Generals. The team was hoping to get back into league action with a couple of points on the road. Unfortunately, a lack of effort from the squad saw them get dropped by the last placed Beardy’s Blackhawks and the first place Prince Albert Mintos.

“We just stunk the place out. It wasn’t good at all,” stated Generals head coach Ray Wareham. “It was just too many guys that think they are a little better than they are and think they don’t need to work. They got taught a lesson, that’s for sure.”

The Generals outshot the Blackhawks 45-24 and scored first, but the Blackhawks scored four straight goals in the second and third periods. Dakota Boutin scored twice in the third period to get the Generals within one, but it just wasn’t enough.

“Beardy’s just worked us into the ice and deserved everything they got,” said Wareham. “I didn’t think we even deserved to be in the same rink as them.”

Rykr Cole scored his seventh of the season from Ben Duperreault and Donovan Neuls.

Despite scoring twice in the third period and outshooting the Blackhawks, Wareham wasn’t impressed with the way his team focused more on their personal game than the team game.

“Too many mistakes and not enough effort. So many guys interested in their points and individual stats than the team stats,” he said. “I thought that was really evident on Saturday, which is too bad for the six or seven guys that give us everything every game.”

The message wasn’t quite received by the team after the loss on Saturday, as they didn’t show up on Sunday afternoon in Prince Albert. The team had just 18 shots on goal, including three in the second period.

“We weren’t really willing to compete,” stated Wareham. “They are so hung up on points. I don’t know who they are listening to, but they really don’t understand the game.”
