Great experience for young squad

Moose Jaw Generals

With such a young team this season, the Moose Jaw Generals went looking for experience. That’s exactly what they got at the Mac’s AAA Midget International Hockey Tournament in Calgary over the break.

“We wanted to come for the experience and we were happy with the pool we were in,” said Generals head coach Ray Wareham. “We knew it was going to be tough, but we are looking to get experience with this young group.”

The Generals wrapped up their tournament on Sunday morning with a 1-1 draw with the Calgary Royals.

“We are the tournament tie champions,” Wareham said with a laugh. “It is a fitting way to end it, I guess.”

Regan Nagy got the Generals on the board in the opening frame on an unassisted goal, but with five minutes remaining in the game, the Royals were able to tie it up and earn a point.

“Too many soft plays and we turned the puck over. They kept us in our end in the third period a little bit. They didn’t do anything different; we just got soft on the puck and couldn’t get the puck out of our zone. I don’t know if we were tired or just looking forward to going home,” stated Wareham. “It was a tough game to get motivated for since there was nothing to play for.”

The Generals finished with the tournament with one loss and three ties and overall are pleased with the development and improvement all players had over the course of the five days they were in Calgary. In their first game they lost 4-2 to Red Deer then tied Lloydminster Baker Hughes Bobcats 3-3 and then tied Pirati Chumotov 4-4 before wrapping up with Calgary.

“I’m real happy. We were by far the youngest team in our pool and we were in a tough pool,” he said. “For the most part, we worked hard and competed. We did the little things. Unfortunately, we just couldn’t find ways to win. We definitely showed that we can play and that’s encouraging.”
