When the Moose Jaw Generals notched their seventh straight win Sunday, they managed to overcome a slow start with a sensational finish.

There were no magical comebacks to pull out of their bag of tricks Wednesday.

The Generals twice fought back to within a goal, but fell 6-4 to the Yorkton Harvest in Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League play.

“We laid an egg tonight from in between the pipes on out. It wasn’t a good effort,” said Generals head coach Ray Wareham whose team erased a two-goal third period deficit before scoring at the buzzer in overtime Sunday to beat Tisdale 4-3 and extend their winning streak.

“We got away with some things Sunday and found a way to win, but probably didn’t deserve too,” said Wareham. “Those bad habits have been creeping in a little, especially defensively — too many guys left open, too many turnovers — it came back to bite us big time.”

The Generals are now 18-9-3 as they prepare to face the Notre Dame Argos Saturday. That game will be played in Assiniboia at 4 p.m. as part of the SaskEnergy Hockey Weekend. The weekend will feature three days of events. Saturday’s triple-header on the ice includes a female midget AAA game and an SJHL contest between Notre Dame and Yorkton at 7:30 p.m.

The Generals took a 2-1 lead in the first period when Ben Duperreault scored a power play goal and Donovan Neuls also scored.

The Harvest tied the game before the end of the period and Chase McKersie scored twice in the second to give them a 4-2 lead.

Rhett Gardner scored short-handed to cut the lead to one. Rykr Cole did the same for the Generals in the third period, but they weren’t able to get any closer.

Cole finished with two points.
