Verrall out for the season after serious injury

Moose Jaw Generals

The Moose Jaw Generals power play finally got going this weekend.

They just wish the chances they got didn’t come at such a high cost.

Saturday Notre Dame Argos defenceman Sven Jung picked up a five-minute kneeing major and a game misconduct for his hit on Generals defenceman Ben Verrall. Verrall broke his femur above his knee and dislocated his knee on the hit.

“They rushed him to Saskatoon (Saturday) and he had surgery (Sunday) morning,” said Generals head coach Ray Wareham. “It wasn’t good. That was one of the worst injuries I’ve seen in my day.”

Verrall is a 16-year-old Prince Albert Raiders prospect.

“The information I received was that they thought all of the tendons and muscles were in place,” said Wareham. “It’s going to be a long process no matter what, but hopefully he can play again.”

The Generals scored three power play goals after that major and cruised to a 6-2 win Saturday in Assiniboia as part of the SaskEnergy Hockey Weekend. Sunday, they beat the Argos 8-5 in Wilcox. Their record improves to 20-9-3 on the season.

“The power play was clicking. We had lots of opportunities,” said Wareham. “(Saturday) we were really ready to go. They took some penalties and sat in the penalty box and we were able to take advantage. We got off to a quick start and never really looked back.”

The Generals power play had been struggling, but was 5-for-10 on the weekend.

The Generals (20-9-3) are tied for second place in the Sask. Midget AAA Hockey League with the Saskatoon Contacts and will play them at home Thursday (7 p.m., Mosaic Place).

The Generals were ahead 2-1 when Verrall was injured and after their three goals on that power play they led 5-1 after the first period.

Cole scored twice and added an assist, while Regan Nagy added a goal and an assist.

Gardner, Tendler and Ben Duperreault also scored.

Ryland Pashovitz made 34 saves for the Generals, while Moose Jaw Warrior prospect Zach Sawchenko made 31 saves for the Argos.
