Following their 2-1 win and 2-2 with the Battlefords Stars, head coach Ray Wareham had nothing but praise for the performance and effort from his team.
“I’m usually pretty hard on these guys, but when they work as hard as they did this weekend, it’s really nice to see. It was really encouraging,” said Wareham. “I thought in the first period (Saturday) we got caught a little flat-footed and were on our heels, but after that we were excellent. It was just a gutsy, gritty effort from our guys.
“The kids were fantastic.”
The Generals came from behind in both games and scored twice in the final 8:38 Sunday to earn the tie.
“There’s a distinct change in our room. There’s a confidence and there’s no quit in the team,” said Wareham who added that they got a contribution from every played in their lineup.
The Generals also got a pair of big contributions from their goalies.
Grant Naherniak made 37 saves in Sunday’s tie while Colby Entz stopped 34 shots in the win.
“They were both fantastic,” said Wareham. “It was nice when our guys made a little mistake, they knew they were back there to bail them out. It gives the other guys a little incentive to take some chances on offence.”
The Generals record improves to 11-6-2-0 on the season. They sit in a tie for fourth with Tisdale. The Generals host the Saskatoon Blazers Thursday night at Mosaic Place.
Generals 2 Stars 2
Spencer Bast opened the scoring for the Stars early in the second period and Mason Benning doubled their lead 5:37 into the third period.
“They made it 2-0 on a broken faceoff play that went through four or five guys and Grant never saw it. We hemmed them in their zone on the next shift and shortly afterwards got one back,” said Wareham.
Jared Dmytriw scored with 8:38 left in the game and Rykr Cole tied the game on a rare power play goal with 1:21 remaining. It was their ninth power play of the weekend, but they converted when it mattered the most.
Donovan Neuls finished with a pair of assists and Cole also had two points.
Generals 2 Stars 1
Braydon Delorme scored with 3:04 left in the third period to give the Generals the win.
Bast gave the Stars an early lead, but Riley Cannon tied the game for the Generals in the second period with Delorme picking up the assist. Dawson Davidson and Trey Tendler also had assists.
The Generals were missing forward Regan Nagy who is out with a back injury.
