Moose Jaw's Joel Jordison organized a bit of a shake-up in his curling team in the offseason.
Jordison's Bushell Park-based foursome, which also included third Scott Bitz and lead Dean Hicke, underwent a makeover at second, with Aryn Schmidt taking over for Derek Owens.
"We've been a good team the last couple of years, and I think we just kind of thought that bringing in a different style of player at second might make a positive difference to our squad," said Jordison. "I'm not sure if it will. It's one of those things we're just kind of hoping."
Schmidt, who has filled in on the team in the past, brings a rock and roll style as opposed to Owens' deft touch on softer weights. The team will have a heavy earlier part of the schedule this season to try to get consistency.
"We start the first week of October, and we're pretty much playing right through with only one or two weeks off before Christmas," said Jordison. "We've got a full slate and we'll have lots of games and lots of time to work . . .
"It's a new era, right? It's just like the start of the ball season. Everybody has high hopes."
Jordison made it to the 3-4 Page playoff game at the Tankard last year but lost to finalist Darrell McKee. With the loss of Owens, Jordison loses points in the cash-heavy Grand Slam series, so if he wants to get back there he is going to have to put up some points in their busy season.
