A large group of local competitors will be looking to add to resumes that already boast a combined 19 national titles when the Canadian Powerlifting Union National Championship begins in Quebec City Thursday.
Moose Jaw will be represented by six local competitors and two more with local ties at the competition that features the deadlift, squat and bench press.
“I think everyone has pretty high hopes,” said local powerlifter Ryan Stinn from Quebec City. “I think everyone is in the running to win. There will be some tough battles for some people.”
Stinn is joined by Melanie Durrant (60 kg female open), Rhaea Fowler (75 kg female junior), Taunia Stevens (75 kg female open), Aaron Ziffle (90 kg male open) and Al Block (125+ kg male master) from Moose Jaw. In addition former local competitors Jeff Butt — 90 kg male master 1 (40-49 years old) and Ryan Fowler (125 kg male open) will also be taking part. Butt has relocated to Newfoundland and Fowler lives in Weyburn.
