What better way to make the most of the best weather so far this spring than to kick back and watch guys and gals fly around the dirt on two wheels?
The Moose Jaw Motocross Association already has one event under their belt for the 2009 season, but Sunday's provincial race was the first one of the year at their home track.
Local motocross fixture Dean Evans said the day couldn't have been more perfect.
"Races went well. We had a lot of riders. The weather was good. We had a nice, moist track," he said. "Overall, it was a good day."
Local racers performed well, with Evans himself garnering two third place finishes. Other Moose Javians of note included Jarret and Kyle Biro, who recently relocated from Yorkton. Between the two of them, they had three top finishes.
Brodie Chelsberg took home gold in the Pro MX-1 and Pro GP events, Dayton Mielke won the Junior MX-2 category, while Matt Marciszn placed first in Junior MX-1 and Jordan Beattie won the Beginner GP.
"Overall, the locals did really well. A lot better than we did in Saskatoon (last weekend)," said Evans.
The crowds were out in full force thanks to the sunshine, and Evans noted that attendance was likely better than usual.
"The crowd coming out was really good," he said. "It was a bit above average, probably because of the nice weather."
Not only does the weather make the day nice for the crowd, but the relative lack of wind helps visibility on the course as well. Moose Jaw's track is notorious for being windy, but on Sunday there was only a light breeze.
"Wind is a big problem in Moose Jaw, but actually, today, the wind was really down," said Evans. "(That helps) a lot."
Even the rain last week was a boon for the riders.
"(The track) was really moist and good," said Evans. "The rain that we had on Tuesday and Wednesday helped us. It really makes a big difference on our track, compared to having to race when we haven't had rain for weeks."
Overall, the season looks positive for the local association.
"Our local (numbers) were up this year, it's really good. It's a positive sign of the sport in Moose Jaw. We have a lot of riders who are involved in the racing circuit," said Evans. "Guys always want to improve and do better."
The riders will travel to Kerrobert and Unity next weekend for two events. Their next home meet will be June 20-21.
