Derek Thomas was ready to take on the world at the Trial des Nations motorcycle competition in Italy this past weekend. Well, except for one minor detail. “Right up until about three days before the event, two (guys on) our team didn’t even have motorcycles,” said the Moose Jaw rider. Thomas and teammate Jonathan English had to scrounge around to come up with a quick solution, or be forced to withdraw from the race. “We joined forces and ended up getting some rental bikes in Italy,” recalled Thomas. “But they were the wrong make, so they were bikes we’ve never ridden before.” But after a few days of practice, the national motorcycle trials team got themselves back on track and finished 13th out of a field of 21 at the competition in Darfo Boario Terme.
