He had three wishes: To learn a different language, to get a degree and to write professionally.
He just went to Spain to polish his spanish, he just got an english degree from Athabasca University and is on a book tour for his first novel. For Randall Sawka, dreams do come true.
Sawka was in Moose Jaw on Monday, signing copies of his first book, Rough Business, a crime thriller, at The Oak & Rose Book Shoppe.
"There are a shortage of these in Canada," said Sawka, who is originally from Alberta and wanted a novel like this set in Prairie towns instead of big cities.
"I'm a Prairie boy myself," he said.
Sawka was first led into the oil business, where he worked in sales. He then wanted to do something different with his life. He went to work on his wish list.
"I was looking for a change," he said.
Sawka is also working on some screenplays and some novels for young teen readers.
"They're like Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew in space," he said.
He, his wife and daughter live in Victoria, and will be touring Eastern Canada until October. He wants to be back in Moose Jaw for the Festival of Words.
