The Moose Jaw Figure Skating Club is covering all the bases, so to speak, with a pair of events this weekend.
On Saturday, the Snowflake Competition will feature 113 skaters from the region competing in their various classifications. Athletes of all ages, from six to 18, will be present to display their skills in what should be a competitive event.
"I think it will be (competitive)," said event co-chair Shelley Hager. "We've got some people coming from Weyburn and Regina... and some smaller towns as well.
"It's nice to be in our own region, here in the city, for the kids."
Sunday will see the next generation of skaters take to the ice in the Carol Humphries Memorial FunFest. Younger athletes and those just beginning in the sport will show off their development in a non-competitive atmosphere meant to showcase the future of speed skating.
"It's a new concept. Some of the clubs in other cities have done it."
"It's nice for them to get a chance to feel what it's like to be out there on their own and show off their skills... it might not look like a lot to some people, but some of them couldn't even stand up on the ice (at one time)."
The event is in remembrance of Humphries, a long-time fixture in Moose Jaw figure skating, died from cancer in 2007.
"People from all over our province and even further will remember Carol because she was such a big part of skating for so many years," said Hager.
The Snowflake begins at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday and will run until around 9:30 p.m. Sunday's FunFest starts with an opening ceremony at 8:30 a.m. and will run until the early afternoon. Both events take place at the Kinsmen arena.
