The South West team is looking to get a boys volleyball team together for the Saskatchewan Summer Games that will be taking place from August 1-4 in Meadow Lake.
There will be a tryout on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Central Collegiate for all boys born Jan. 1, 1997 and younger.
With changes made this year, it saw the sport of volleyball move from the Winter Games to the Summer Games. The organization also changed the zoning system and how teams are represented. When the sport was in the Winter Games, it was usually played during the February break. Now, they have appointed zone coaches and are holding tryouts to get “mini provincial teams” together from each of the zones for both boys and girls.
“We are looking for athletic ability, understanding of the game, size is always a plus, volleyball skill and guys that have some of those factors and will fit together well as a group,” said head coach Darin Wohlgemuth.
The team will have a maximum roster of 10 players that must be set in July, but the coaches will be taking a larger number of players and training them through March to June before making the final cuts. Also helping Wohlgemuth with the coaching will be Shaune Gray, Central Cyclones coach.
“We want to make sure that the group of guys all get a really fair shot at making the team,” said Wohlgemuth.
The tryout will go for about an hour and a half and will consist of a practice style drills of varying difficulties that will show the coaches the levels of volleyball skills of each player. In the second half of the practice, there will be a scrimmage so that the coaches can see the players putting the skills into action.
“It is going to be a lot like a regular high school practice,” explained Wohlgemuth. “We will give them a taste or higher level action and do a little bit of teaching along with way so that we make sure that everybody that comes to the tryout gets to learn something and improve a skill.”
There is a $10 per player fee to cover costs for the tryouts. Any players interested should just show up at Central Collegiate at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday to tryout.
