What was set to be the biggest Dusty Moose in its short history has been cancelled.
With conditions better suited to a muddy moose, organizers felt that the annual kayak, mountain bike and running event couldn’t be held as scheduled Sunday morning.
Dusty Moose organizer Jim Large said there were a few factors that combined in their decision.
“First and foremost was the facility,” said Large. “It’s a five (kilometre) loop — so for every rider to ride it four times . . . it would just chew the grass up and chew the mud up. Once you chew it up, the water on the downhill slope runs, you get more erosion and you end taking a nice, fun mountain bike trail and turning it into just a big, wide path.
“It would have really just destroyed the facility.”
There was also a fear of safety with the possible treacherous conditions.
The Dusty Moose a somewhat unusual triathlon given its format which has led to it becoming a fun event for both serious triathletes and novice teams that want to try the event as a group.
Given a forecast for the low single digits and rain for Sunday morning, Large didn’t feel it would be a fun experience.
