The top of the seventh inning in last night’s tilt between Remax and the Park Hotel Giants saw a little bit of everything. Fortunately for Remax, all that variety included the two winning runs.
Remax won the Memorial Field Fastball League contest 6-4, pulling ahead thanks to two singles, a hit batsman, passed ball, fielder’s choice and RBI groundout in their final bat. Pitcher Tim McKaig then sat down the side to complete the win.
The game had been a seesaw affair up to that point, with three lead changes. The Giants answered a first-inning Remax run with two in their half. Three consecutive one-out singles followed by a walk and wild pitch put the Giants on the board, but two baserunners were left stranded.
After Remax answered with a sacrifice fly in the second, the Giants went ahead again thanks to a big fly from Terry Banilevic.
The game stayed 3-2 until Lee Behrns followed a Shaun Sullivan single with a two-run shot in the fifth to put Remax back on top. Back-to-back doubles in the bottom half from Scott Moerike and Banilevic evened the score, after which reliever Tim McKaig struck out the side to leave Banilevic stranded.
In total, McKaig retired the final nine batters, striking out five, in earning the win. Derrick Ross, despite 10 K’s, took the loss. Remax starter Bill Cridland went four innings, striking out five.
