On his way to a major lawn bowling tournament in London, Ont., Ernie Meid stopped at a one-day tournament in Kitchener.
The decision paid off.
Meid and his pairs partner Jeff Mason won the Bill Boettger Memorial Tournament Saturday. The tournament featured 32 teams and saw each play three games, each lasting 14 ends.
Despite not being amongst the favourites, Meid’s team won their games 20-11, 22-7 and 21-6 to claim the title.
“It really went well,” said Meid. “We bowled well and got a few breaks.”
He and Mason split $500 in prize money and Meid said he’s already paid for his entry fee for next year.
After his success in Kitchener, Meid took part in the Western Ontario Bowls Association (WOBA) tournament in London.
Meid finished with a 2-2 record with his teams in the fours and the pairs at WOBA. In the singles he lost his opening game to Dave Cook and then later lost to Dave Jeffries before winning four games to win the C flight.
“If I hadn’t run into any Daves I would have been okay,” said Meid.
In the C final, Meid scored seven points in four straight ends to claim a 21-13 win over Eldon McFadyen.
Meid and his Saskatchewan teammates will head to Regina for the tri-province challenge starting Saturday. The Saskatchewan team will play against Alberta and Manitoba.
