The Park Hotel Colts drew first blood early in the Moose Jaw Senior Women’s Fastball League final.
The Colts scored five runs in the first inning and held on for a 5-0 win over the KCS Marketing Slammers in Game 1 of the best-of-five final. Game 2 is tonight (7 p.m., Caribou Heights).
The Colts were rolling after claiming the Intermediate B provincial title on the weekend and they stayed hot early.
“I think we’re still on a high from the weekend. Everyone’s hitting,” said Colts first baseman Jasmine Jackman. “The Slammers are a really good team. They always have potential to come back at any time or take the lead. We need more than one good inning.”
However, one of their worries at provincials was their ability to continue to score after a big inning. In the provincial final they won 8-1 after taking a 6-0 lead after the first inning. Monday they failed to score after going ahead.
“You get a little bit of a comfort zone with five (runs), but they have such a good hitting team you can’t ever feel too comfortable because they can always come back,” said Colts pitcher Kim Neithercut.
The Slammers were able to put together nine hits and had some rallies, but weren’t able to cash a run in. They finished with nine hits, but stranded 10 runners.
The Colts took the lead when Jackman hit a two-run single. The Slammers officially made three errors in the first, but were inches away from making those plays to get them out of the inning. Instead they just missed getting outs and it ended up costing them.
Sandi Gray hit a fielder’s choice that ended up cashing in two runs on an error. Caralie Wait followed with a lined shot over the third base bag to drive in another run.
Penny Barker, Kryssi Coupland and Jenn Wiens were each 2-for-4 at the plate for the Slammers.
Eight different Colts had their eight singles.
Erin Riley had a very good start for the Slammers despite taking the loss. She only allowed eight hits before making way for Jess Wiens who retired the Colts in order in her inning of work.
