The Moose Jaw Mitchell Moxie Relics are the defending champions and hosts for the Master Women’s Western Canadian Softball Championships.
More importantly, the local team is full of players who love the game.
The Relics went to Westerns a year ago in Kamloops, B.C. only looking to enjoy playing ball together.
“Winning wasn’t first on our minds. We just wanted to go on a holiday, have fun and play ball,” said Lydia Bruse from the Relics. “In our minds we were really relaxed. It wasn’t about whether we won or lost, it was just going out to play ball.”
That approach saw them win every game they played in securing the western title for players 35 and older.
When play begins Friday in the women’s draw (the men will begin Thursday) the Relics feel enjoying the game will help them play their best ball.
“In this age category there’s a deep love for the game,” said Kelly Binner from the Relics. “There has to be. Otherwise you get pulled in so many other directions with work and family. To stay in it you have to really want to stay in it and to do that you have to love it.”
The Relics will face most of the same teams they met a year ago at Westerns. Alberta Silverline, the Calgary Wave and Saskatchewan Connextion are all returning.
The Relics open the tournament with games at 12:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Friday. All games are at Caribou Heights. The final is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday.
