Twelve hours earlier the Moose Jaw Masters would have probably taken a 2-1 record after the opening day of the Masters Men’s Western Canadian Softball Championship.
The way it played out, that 2-1 record left them thinking they could have had more.
“I said from the start we needed to be 2-1. We couldn’t be anything less than 2-1,” said Moose Jaw catcher Pat Swallow.
Moose Jaw played well, but came out on the losing end of a 5-4 game with Ladner (B.C.) to end the day. A two-out error in the bottom of the seventh produced the game-winning run.
Moose Jaw won their first two games of the tournament with a 10-1 win over Strathmore (Alta.) and a 9-8 win over Clanwilliam (Man.) in an extra-inning.
Despite the blemish, Swallow was pleased with their first day of play.
“It always takes us a little bit to get going,” said Swallow. “Once we get our bats going we’re rolling. We have a good team — good sticks, good pitching.
“We have a good core of guys. We have a lot of guys who are laid back. They’re here to have some fun and play some serious ball. We have a really good bunch of guys. We’ve been together for a lot of years.”
