As Paige Hager holds her newly-earned bronze medal with a beaming smile, you can tell she's gotten the taste of success.
And she likes it.
Hager, 11, placed third in the BMO Skate Canada Sectional championship a few weeks ago in Saskatoon. She and her coach, Jana Beesley-Capili, were both ecstatic at the medal finish.
"At first, we thought (she would finish in) the top ten," says Beesley-Capili. "Then she was skating so well that we said top five. So for her to get third, we're just thrilled."
Hager competed in the pre-juvenile classification at the tournament, which is a qualifier to larger competitions that eventually lead to the national championships. But her coach says that - this time around, anyway - it was just a learning experience.
"At her level she's not really going onto Westerns or Canadians, but next year she's hoping to be in pre-novice which would allow her to move on," said Beesley-Capili. "So this year was a real learning year to see what the competitive team is all about and see her competition for the future."
