The sport of powerlifting is all about improving and beating your own total - as well as the competition.
Rhaea Fowler continues to get better in her sport and she continues her reign as the Moose Jaw Times-Herald's Female Athlete of the Year.
Fowler, 20, won her third straight honour after another superb season on the world's stage.
Fowler earned two first-place votes to narrowly edge Peacock multi-sport star Kristina Segall who also received two first-place votes.
Fowler shone as she finished second overall in the women's open under-75 kg class at the International Powerlifting Federation's world championships.
She won gold in the squat with a 232.5 kilogram lift. She won silver in the bench press with a lift of 145 kg and deadlifted 200 kg. That was good for a 577.5 kg total and a second place finish overall.
All of her totals were personal bests and are even more impressive since Fowler was still eligible to compete as a junior, but decided to enter the open competition after breaking Canadian junior and open records a year ago.
Fowler was leading after two events, but was caught by Norwegian Inger Blikra, an experienced competitor is more than twice Fowler's age.
Fowler successfully completed all nine of her lifts in the competition - a very rare feat at a world championship.
Fowler also won the women's open national championship this year.
The panel of voters were Randy Palmer, Matthew Gourlie and Taylor Lambert from the Times-Herald sports department and T-H city editor Jason Small.
Segall broke the Moose Jaw High School Soccer League's all-time scoring mark in her senior season. Segall netted her 44th career goal as she helped lead the Peacock Tornadoes to a city title and a trip to the SHSAA 3A provincials. Segall also led the league in scoring this season.
In addition to representing her school, Segall also finished in the top-10 in scoring the Saskatchewan Premier Soccer League with the Moose Jaw Bandidos. She also made the provincial Under-17 team and was short-listed for the Canada Games team that will be chosen this coming summer. Segall also won a pair of gold medals and a silver at the city track meet. She also played basketball for Peacock.
Previous winner Lisa Franks finished third in the voting after she attended her third Paralympic Summer Games. This was the first time Franks took part in a team sport as she and the Canadian wheelchair basketball team finished fifth.
Lorie Boyle finished fourth in the voting after she won her third straight senior provincial golf championship and finished 15th at the senior women's golf nationals.
Also receiving votes were Kehlsie Crone (basketball and soccer), Danae Lockert (volleyball), Tessa Hill (figure skating) and Jessica Meyer (soccer).
