The Moose Jaw chapter of Amnesty International is encouraging local residents to write for their rights Wednesday.
To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the U.N. declaration of human rights, members of the Moose Jaw chapter will be at the Java Express Cafe offering information and opportunities to get involved.
"There will be information, petitions, appeal letters and cards for people to sign," said Dicky Scholten, a member of Amnesty International Moose Jaw group No. 129.
She said there are many amnesty groups around the world and their ultimate goal is to fight for the right of individuals or communities whose basic human rights are under attack.
What the group does is write letters on behalf of these communities and people, putting pressure on governments and representatives where human rights are being abused, said Scholten
"Amnesty International sends out thousands of letters each year."
She said 50 per cent of cases the group becomes involved with end in a positive way. "Either the treatment gets better or they are released from prison and so on."
Wednesday, group members will be at the Main Street North coffee shop from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
