The Peacock Tornadoes girls soccer team got a good start on the weekend with a short bench.
The Tornadoes won 3-1 over Weyburn and 3-2 over Estevan at Sunningdale in a Kristina Segall goal-scoring clinic. Segall scored twice against Weyburn and had a hat trick against Estevan. Amy van Den Hooven scored the other goal for Peacock against Weyburn.
"I thought we played better than we did Thursday (afternoon)," said Peacock co-coach Dave Hutchinson. "We still don't have all our players, but I thought the girls stepped up better and their positioning was better."
Peacock stormed the net in the game against Weyburn, with Van Den Hooven and Segall getting numerous chances. Segall eventually connected on a penalty shot to seal the win.
"You hate to miss so many opportunities, and if they go down there once and score a goal, bang they're right back in the game," said Hutchinson. "We did OK. We didn't let it phase us and the opportunities were still there. We just couldn't finish."
Hutchinson is trying to work in some of the younger players due to the graduation of some key players. The line-up got even younger temporarily as the series went on.
"We had a few injuries in the game that got Estevan back into the game but the girls toughed it out," Hutchinson said, adding Kyla Hambly played well in defence.
The team is going have to get a little bit healthier, but working in younger players hasn't been tough.
"It hasn't been a problem so far, so it's kind of fun everybody's getting time so far," said Hutchinson. "It was a nice start to the season and a beautiful day for it."
Moose Jaw teams, including Peacock, are getting ready for the eighth annual Soccerfest this weekend. In total, there will be 16 teams from across the province with games going Friday and Saturday at Sunningdale and Smith Park soccer fields. There is no admission charge for the games.
