The soccer team from 15 Wing Moose Jaw erupted for five second half goals Thursday afternoon.

That was more than enough to earn them an opening game win at the Canadian Forces Prairie Region men’s soccer championship in Moose Jaw.

In their second game, no second half heroics were forthcoming.

Following their 5-0 over 4 Wing Cold Lake, 15 Wing drew with 17 Wing Winnipeg 0-0. If Winnipeg and Moose Jaw are tied in the standings after the round robin Winnipeg holds the tiebreaker after winning a penalty shootout 5-4.

“We weren’t happy with this finish at all,” said Dave Keddy from the 15 Wing Moose Jaw team following the 0-0 draw.

“The finish is disappointing. Winnipeg is a good side, but we thought we could beat them.”

In other opening day action CFB Shilo tied CFB Edmonton 3-3, 17 Wing Winnipeg beat CFB Edmonton 1-0 and CFB Shilo beat 4 Wing Cold Lake 4-1.

The five-team round robin will wrap up today at the Sunningdale Fields.

In the opener, Moose Jaw didn’t panic after a scoreless opening. Mike Strosack scored twice, while Haley, Morton Letnert and Morgan Strachan also scored. Juan Gomez earned the shutout in goal.

“We had a few extra substitutions that they didn’t have,” said Keddy. “They were a little short-sided and we had a full team. At the end of the day I think the fresh legs made a difference.”

The competition won’t get any easier for 15 Wing as they look to rebound against CFB Edmonton (9 a.m., Sunningdale West) and CFB Shilo (6:30 p.m., Sunningdale East).
