Peacock splits weekend soccer games
The Peacock Tornadoes posted a confidence-building win a tough, heavy loss in the span of a couple of hours.
Such is life in the early season of Moose Jaw High School Soccer League action.
The Tornadoes opened play Saturday morning with a 4-1 win over Estevan, but suffered a 9-0 loss to Weyburn in the afternoon. Swift Current beat Weyburn 1-0 to assume sole control of first place. Swift Current also beat Estevan.
“We’re seeing some improvement every game. That’s what we’re striving for,” said Peacock coach Sandi Hutchinson.
“We’re happy with how the team is progressing. We’re on a steep learning curve since we lost most of our vets from last year.”
Jayme Hoffman opened the scoring against Estevan and Alexis Abbott scored three times for the Tornadoes. Chandra Toker replied for Estevan.
“They played well,” said Hutchinson.
“Alexis got a hat trick. She’s a girl that came to us from volleyball, so that was nice to see.”
The second game was going to be a harder test and playing two games in a day was a tough test early in the season.
“Even just trying to get in shape is a problem with the soccer season starting right off the get-go,” said Hutchinson who saw Hoffman leave the game with a hamstring injury. The Tornadoes had some other minor injuries and were missing a few more players.
“For part of this game we were only playing with 10 players because we didn’t have any more subs,” Hutchinson added.
Sabrina Mainil scored five goals for Weyburn, while Megan Johnson scored three and Lacey Happ also scored.
“Weyburn is a nice strong team,” said Hutchinson. “We enjoyed watching them, they had some nice balls come in.”
The Tornadoes will have another tough test when they face Swift Current next in league action.
