The battles continued Thursday on the courts of the Moose Jaw Tennis Club, as the men's singles city championship tournament moved into its second day of competition while the men's and mixed doubles events kicked off. Number-two seed Jim Kirkpatrick knocked Sterling Smith down to the consolation side of the singles bracket in straight sets (7-5, 6-2). "For the first round, you're not sure what you're going to get," said Kirkpatrick. "Sterling played a really solid game. I haven't played him in quite a few years, and he was much-improved tonight. "I told him I had to bring out all my shots to beat him today." While Kirkpatrick was pleased with his play overall, he said the key to his victory was his serve, and wearing down his more agile opponent. "I served pretty well. I didn't lose my serve at all, and that's always been a big part of my game," said the veteran. "He's got younger legs and can get to the ball better than I can. So I had to start moving him around with slices and other things like that." Kirkpatrick moves on to play Matt Carleton next on Friday. But he doesn't hold out hope for claiming a city title with so many whippersnappers in his way.
