The Moose Jaw Tennis Club championships got off to a great start Wednesday morning.
The five-day tournament opened with a pair of great matches as Gene Rizak and Brigette Wiebe beat Wilf Wiebe and Gena Parent 7-5, 1-6, 10-3 in mixed doubles play. At the same time Drew Hager and Brenda Dowling beat Gerry Gieni and Joan Buckmaster 7-8 (8), 7-5.
“It was quite a good morning of tennis,” said Hager, the club manager and club pro. “We had a mixed match against Gerry and Joan that was very competitive.
“Our game was very close and the other was a three setter.”
It was a busy day for Hager as he won three matches. After opening with his mixed doubles win, he beat Ray Ritsco 6-3, 6-1 in men’s singles action.
He and Jordon Ponak beat Ritsco and Ernie Coulsen 6-0, 6-0 in men’s doubles. Hager and Ponak are the defending men’s doubles champions.
In other opening day action Kim Hagan and Brian Swanson beat Andrew Cassidy and John Sehn 6-4, 6-4 in men’s doubles. Cassidy and Sehn went on to defeat Sterling Smith and Bryce Warren 6-3, 7-5 as the round robin continued.
In men’s singles Gerry Gieni beat Bryce Warren 6-3, 6-0 and Swanson defeated Mike Aldridge 6-0, 6-3.
The tournament features men’s and women’s singles and doubles as well as a mixed doubles tournament.
Action will conclude Sunday with the finals in each category.
