Gena Parent has had little problems with her first two opponents in the 2010 Moose Jaw Tennis Club Annual Championship.
She’s beaten both opponents in straight sets and the most games an opponent has won against her in a set is only three games.
For a player of her skill, that’s not the surprising part.
It’s that those two opponents she has beaten so far are men.
After beating John Sehn Thursday night 6-1, 6-0 and Brian Swanson on Friday night 6-1, 6-3, Parent is now in the semifinal stages of the Men’s Singles finals and will play Jim Kirkpatrick on Saturday. Kirkpatrick beat Gerry Gieni in a three-set marathon Friday, (7-6, 4-6, 10-6).
One of the main reasons she chose to participate in the Men’s Singles was because if she wanted to play singles, playing against the men was the only option.
“There’s no ladies and because it was a club championship, I wanted to play singles and they said ‘yeah, come play in the men’s,’” said Parent. “I’m quite happy with that.
“I’m comfortable with whoever’s there out there, I love the game of tennis.”
