The South Central District Championships in high school track and field were held Wednesday at Gutheridge Field. Those who went to watch can tell you we have some incredible athletes in this part of Saskatchewan.
From runners to jumpers to throwers, there are young athletes from this area who excel. Many have a natural talent for it, while others work hard to be among the best in their field. Either way, to actually watch it is a thing of beauty.
But if you take it back a few steps, there are many other stories to be told. For one thing, coaches have told the Times-Herald it isn't always easy getting people out for track. It's a team event, but with individual focus. Ultimately, though, participation is the key.
Anyone who has watched a 3,000m race on a track knows the leaders can put a fair distance between themselves and the rest of the field, sometime lapping other competitors. And while these front runners are amazing to watch, so too are those who bring up the rear with determination and a competitive spirit.
Track is a team sport, but individual competitors shine and others can't help but admire some of the performances they see. They go into a meet knowing a certain athlete from a specific school has the potential to set a new record and most will cheer him or her on, regardless of school affiliation.
Track and field is athleticism at its finest.
