Dave Thomson, from St. George, Ont., has an interesting hobby. He researches historic war medals he finds at online auction houses and tries to get individuals or organizations in communities where the soldiers were from to purchase the items.
A collection of interesting items he found on EBay includes medals awarded to twin Moose Jaw brothers, who both served in the First World War. The items are on sale for US$1,150 and purchasers have until Sunday to buy the medals at that price.
Thomson said one of the brothers was Royal Flying Corps Cadet Cyril Albert Baker, who died in 1917 at age 20 during a training mission in Fort Worth, Texas. For this, he earned the George V Memorial Cross.

If there is a philanthropist in Moose Jaw, now is a good time for them to step forward and bring these home from British Columbia.

There will be most likely be comments made by Thomsons about 'valour should not be for sale', but many times, medals end up in estate sales and they naturally fall to dealers and collectors.

Families wishing to donate medals to museums quickly learn there is no budget to purchase them, and the promised tax receipt for 'full value' is worth a mere 29% come federal tax time. Is it any wonder they choose to sell them instead?
