In the race where age has been only a number, there were some more twists and turns Thursday at the girls 3,000-metre race run the day after the South Central District Athletic Association Track and Field Meet.
All the girls in every age group in the district, who qualified for the race and were brave enough to face the cold, soggy and windy Gutheridge Field track, ran in one large race.
Lindsay Fish, a Central Cyclones runner, finished first in the race despite being a Grade 9, with Sadie Schaeffer, a fellow minor niner from Vanier, finished second. Vanier senior Linnea Smith was third.
After the first two laps, Fish, Schaeffer, Smith and Central junior Camareigh Stewart were all bunched together for the remainder of the race, with Schaeffer and Smith sharing the burden of leading the pack.
But just as the final lap bell rang as the four approached the finish line to start their last lap, Fish moved into the Lane 2 and blasted past the pack and never looked back.
She said afterwards that the race’s pace was slow and she had plenty left in the tank for the last lap. She finished first in the race and the district with 12:03:40, about 12 seconds ahead of Schaeffer, 12:13:96 and 20 seconds ahead of Smith, 12:24:00.
