The South Central district got off to a fast start at the Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association provincial track and field meet.

The host district claimed a trio of medals before noon on the opening day of the two-day event.

It was the start of a strong day for the host district at Gutheridge Field. South Central sits in third place in the district standings and have 12 medals — six gold, four silver and two bronze.

Vanier’s Keegan Arnyek won two medals as he won the long jump and finished second in the 100 metres.

Arnyek jumped 6.12 metres to win the junior boys long jump. Arnyek crossed line in 11.22 seconds on the 100m.

The local field athletes got the district off to a fast start. Central senior Danika Wolfe had the best discus throw of her life as she claimed the senior girls title with a throw of 34.30 metres.

Vanier senior boys’ competitor Chris Sanford also had a great day. His season best in long jump had been under six metres, but Sanford leapt 6.67m to win gold.

In the senior girls triple jump, Central’s Jina Barker finished second with a jump of 11.25m.

Peacock helped lead a strong day on the track. Kyle Dalgarno won a gold medal in the junior boys 400m with a run of 52.91 seconds.

Taylor Stevenson was second in the junior girls 80m hurdles (12.83), while Vanier’s Sadie Schaeffer was second in the midget girls 1,500m (5:06.49).

McKenna Ehman from Peacock was second in the midget girls 100m in a time of 12.96 seconds.

It wasn’t just the athletes from Moose Jaw that helped the medal haul. James Jeffers from Bengough won the senior boys shot put with a throw of 14.29m.

Reid Howe from Mossbank won the senior boys javelin with a throw of 49.49m, while Rouleau’s Joshua Larsen finished third for South Central with a throw of 48.41m in the same event.
