Vanier's Hannah Heisler gets ready to throw during the Senior Girls Javelin Throw during the Moose Jaw DivisionTrack and Field meet on Wednesday afternoon at Gutheridge Field. Heisler finished with a first place finish in the event with a throw of 29.53 metres.

Vanier Collegiate likes tradition and their athletes continued that streak after cruising to their sixth straight track and field overall team title championship.

The Vikings had an outstanding day at the SCDAA Moose Jaw Track and Field meet on Wednesday afternoon at Guthridge Field.

"Its a good feeling," said Leanne Meili, coach for Vanier's track team. "I think for the Grade 12s, it kind of hits them that it's their last year and they want to go out on a winning note and for them, it just means that four years of track and field has paid off to say that they have been a part of that team for four years."

A dozen of senior Vikings jumped on the podium to accept the trophy at the end of the hot and tiresome track meet.

I'm happy for them," Meili said of the seniors. "For them to get those results is great."

Senior Keegan Arnyek cleaned up at his final city meet, after setting a new record in the senior boys triple jump category and won the male individual title for the most points through the events.

"Going into it, I knew I had a good chance of getting the record," said Arnyek. "I wanted to go over 13 and then I was doing all right in the first couple then I faulted on the last few. On the last one, I got it."

Breaking records is nothing new for Arnyek, who has been doing so since he got to Vanier Collegiate, but this one held some extra meaning, the record hadn’t been broken since 1973 with a distance jumped of 12.97 metres. Arnyek shattered the record with his 13.22 metre jump on Wednesday.

"Every year during high school, I've been breaking records, especially in triple jump, so it's a honour to break a record that is so old that no one else could do it," he said.
